Caring for Allergy Prone and Sensitive Skin

Whats the difference? Some of the signs are very similar, and of course, it’s possible to have sensitive skin in addition to an allergic reaction to a particular substance, there are some differences. If you take the time to examine the causes of the redness, itchiness, or swelling, it will give you insight on how to make your skin happy.

☀︎ Allergic reaction

In most cases, a substance has triggered an immune reaction in the body known as a histamine response. Histamine is a natural chemical that’s released during an allergic reaction which can cause a number of symptoms that we tend to associate with an allergic reaction, including rashes, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, wheezing and even stomach cramps vomiting or difficulty breathing. For these more extreme symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

Common skin allergens include:
• Gold, nickel and other metals
• Parabens and fragrances in skincare and cosmetics
• Antibiotics
• Rubber and latex (often in sponges)

☀︎ sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is skin that overreacts to certain aggressors ranging from environmental to emotional factors. Women are generally more likely to have sensitive skin, especially if they are fair-skinned. Additionally, the skin of newborns and young children is often hypersensitive. The severity of reactions may vary from occasional (or in specific conditions), daily to extreme. It may cause dryness, itchy or redness, which in turn has a chain effect on people's self-confidence.

How do I know if I have Sensitive Skin?

• Frequently feeling tight or uncomfortable
• Skin is dry in the winter or on the airplane but oily in the summer
• Easily flushed after drinking alcohol
• Some dry areas with uneven skin tone prone to redness
• Reactions after the application of skincare or makeup
• Itchiness when wearing man-made fabrics like acrylic, polyester, rayon or acetate

How to Avoid Environmental Triggers for Sensitive Skin?

When the natural barrier function of the skin is compromised, the nerve endings in the uppermost layer of the skin can be further irritated by:

• Sun exposure or air pollution
• Frequent changes in temperature
• Hard or hot water
• Stress or a lack of sleep
• Menstrual or pregnancy hormone changes
• Chlorine from the swimming pool

Daisy's Tips

Living with skin prone to allergies myself, I know how annoying it can be. In a world populated by those blessed with gorgeous, flawless skin that doesn’t seem to require much skincare products at all.

People often ask me

“do we really need skincare products?”

“Is it worth it to spend so much money and time on the skin?”

Some people are Born with Sensitive Skin. Count me in!

Things like extended exposure or even just sleeping later can disrupt the function of the natural barrier for these folks and disturb the Water-Oil balance. These will spur on reactions that result in dry, peeling or rashes on the skin.

Some People Have Naturally Stronger Skin

Their skin has a good natural barrier and oil-water balance, so there is no need to add too many skin care products. Genetics and lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise are all factors, so each person's condition is different and can't be easily compared.

The Daily How-To

I would firstly recommend a regular sunscreen routine to everyone. In addition to the increasing UV rays, UVA and UVB are all irritating to the skin. We are exposed to these ultraviolet rays on cloudy days as well as sunny ones. Make sure to wash your hands before skin care, and do not touch allergy prone skin with your hands if it can be helped. Lastly be sure to check whether the skin care products and maintenance procedures you use are suitable for you. If you continue to have allergies, consult a professional to avoid damage from allergies.

In general, paying attention to details during daily care can have a big pay off - especially during or after an allergic reaction. Throughout the maintenance process we want to gently promote the restoration of the skin's natural barrier function by giving it the nourishment needed!

1. Use warm water when washing your face to avoid irritating the skin overly hot water.

2. Choose a mild cleansing lotion and facial cleanser.

3. To restore the natural barrier function of the skin, the most important thing is to moisturize. After moisturizing, use oil to lock in moisture and prevent it from evaporating in the air!

4. If the skin is painful or sensitive, use a spray-type lotion without direct contact with the skin.

5. Use simple skincare products. Look for products with less preservatives. It is best to avoid whitening or anti-aging products, instead choose products fore purely moisturizing.

6. Moisturizing Masks (DaisyCode Flora Lavender) can help restore the skin's natural barrier function while soothing and calming the skin.
