Chapter 2 | A Bar in the Clouds | The Emirates Experience
Before I set foot in the airport, Emirates sent a town car to whisk my partner and I away to begin our Emirates journey, dotted with many new recently launched services!
Emirates Lounge ＠ Dubai
Our first stop was Dubai to catch the connecting flight to Milan. In Dubai I knew I needed to check out the lounge, so well documented on their webpage but I was not prepared to discover it spanned across almost an entire floor! With different levels of amenities you can access the boarding directly through the VIP room, which actually means that the boarding gate is inside the VIP room! Here’s me waiting to board the plane IN the VIP room!
The expansive VIP room has most creature comforts you can want - food and beverages, washing, lounging and entertainment areas. I took advantage of the spa next to the VIP room - its always a treat to draw a bath to relax tense muscles. I am still so grateful to Prada for making such generous and considerate accommodations for us!
In addition to the standard buffet there is also a special ice cream cart. I was tempted to get one of everything!
It was midnight when I departed from Taiwan so there weren’t many people in the on-board bar on accounts of being asleep! A sharp contrast to the lively bar in the daytime on my short flight from Dubai to Milan!
In addition to surprisingly tasty meals on the plane the bar is another place to order drinks, pick from the plates flight attendant are circulating, and chat with friends in the large seats nearby over drinks and food.
Chatting and relaxing, a flight attendant offered to take a picture for me and of course I said yes! Using a Polaroid Camera this is the photo she captured!
Emirates Aircraft Design
Ranked the World’s Best Airline of 2016, I’ve learnt the Emirates’ brand of hospitality and luxury cabin comforts are really second to none. One outstanding feature of the UAE in-flight media is the diversity of linguistic options! No matter where you call home, you can choose your native language to enjoy the in-flight entertainment. Another surprise was the flat-laying seat design. My previous business class experience on other airlines have been fair - with the one exception of always feeling the seat was never large enough, leaving my legs to dangle on the front of the chair. On this flight, while the business class seats did not look large, the ergonomics were excellent! You can even remove the middle handle for further space if you’re travelling with family or close friends that wish to sleep together.
Some other designs that stood out to me was the mini drinks cabinet and this spacious locker next to the seat. Its so important to hydrate, especially in an environment that has controlled climate. With the cabinet, hydration is never far and theres no need to flag down a flight attendant. The compact design also guards any beverages from spilling.
As someone who often works with a computer or various stationary on flights I often require accessories like my hard drive and charger. If it’s a long-distance flight, I will also have my makeup bag complete with all my tools for makeup removal and skin care. All together it can be quite a lot to sort out from the suitcase before stowing it in the overhead cabin. With the seat-side locker design I was able to keep everything nearby, no organizing needed! Another huge plus is not having to worry about disturbing other passengers when I need something.
