Chef's Playground Eatery | A Fresh Local Steveston, BC Brunch
Looking for delicious food in Richmond ?
Looking out onto a scenic stretch of the historic fishing village of Steveston, Chef's playground’s cosy open kitchen draws in visitors with playful reinventions of iconic comfort foods. With colourful menus and decor to match the owner & head chef, Gordon Wu’s playtime vision, it feels like a inviting place where everything and anything is possible.
With classical training in culinary art and hospitality from the Art Institute of Vancouver and over 15 years of experience, Gordon’ has always been devoted to cooking since childhood. Having watched more Japanese Iron Chef than cartoons, Chef's Playground is where Gordon continues to let his imagination run wild with fresh local ingredients. Ultimately Chef’s playground is meant to be a place where a Chef can play and have fun creating fare.
Hash brown enthusiasts will note the rich garlic taste to the thin, crisp potato cuts. The cut offered a delightful range of crispiness for the senses. Without being over cooked, the moisture really allowed the herbs to come through.
Their weekend brunch is available until 2pm. Daisy and I both had bennies, she had the Crab and Shrimp and I the SteelHead Gravlax Benny. Far from being a strange combination of Gravol and a laxative it was a eye-opening explosion of flavour. The hollandaise sauce had a beautiful balance of citrus flavour to tease out the savoury goodness of the Gravlax - which actually refers to the preparation of salmon, buried in a dry marinade of salt, sugar, and dill, and cured for days. The word “gravlax” comes from the Scandinavian word grav, which translates to “grave” in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and lax or laks, which means “salmon”.
Both our bennies were pulled together with focaccia bread, an atypical choice for Eggs Benedict that brought each bite to a daringly rich symphony of flavour.
We really love their egg benny and lavender lemonade !!
