Before the trip I was offered a makeup artist to prep for this runway show. Of course I said yes. As I am a make-up artist myself I have a special appreciation for being someone else’s canvas. I find the process extremely relaxing. I am always curious about the touch of someone' else’s brush and what I may look like in their vision.

Headed back to the hotel, Renos Politis was already waiting for us in the restaurant. Renos Politis belongs to Etoile Management, a Milan based agency representing some of the most elite hair and make-up artists in fashion. Founded by Barbara Glaviano they are responsible for countless editorial looks on celebrities and high-end brand and fashion spreads. Just this year Renos was one of the make-up artists for the D&G FW21 show!

Inspiration

The makeup drew heavily from the 70s and this Capelli Winter hat I wore. After Miuccia Prada took over Prada in 1978 we continue to see nods to the 70s throughout many collections. Things like the bright and exaggerated melancholic colours and patterns that mirrored the turbulent spirit of the 70’s - motifs that may call to mind revolutionary movements striving for equality, the recognition of different sexual orientations, races, and marginalized voices of society.

A lot of these topics are reborn in modern pop-culture through avenues like art and fashion. I wanted to add our own twist to represent this new and eternal energy by creating a montage with some features of Renaissance - something that represents rebirth with the coming of knowledge. Renaissance oil paintings often capture a beautiful brightness shining into darkness. Taken the iridescent, layered quality found in oils we also referenced one of the most iconic photographs of the 70s. In the process of creating together, I was reminded that every day comes with new inspirations, connections and beginning.

What is a montage?

A Montage is an assembly of images to represent an idea. It can be interpreted as the intentional collage of space and time.

In film, a montage is a key editing technique in which shots are juxtaposed in a fast-paced fashion that compresses time and conveys a lot of information in a short period. With the freedom to move between different times, places, distances and angles, montages have the power to combine images to draw intellectual meaning or extended metaphors to challenge the views of an audience about context and belonging.
