About The Creation of Adam

The Creation of Adam lives on the Sistine Chapel as a part of a larger depiction of the Book of Genesis which narrates God pulling forth creation from empty chaos. In six days, light, atmosphere, dry land, plants, celestial bodies and animals were created. On the sixth day, Adam and Eve were formed in his own image and placed in the Garden of Eden. The seventh day, or the Sabbath, became a holy day to rest.

With symbolic, twisting dynamic forms, Michelangelo Buonarroti creates a quietly decadent narrative. The scene of the Creation of Adam does not directly depict God forming Adam, but rather focuses on the abstract divine spark connecting man and God.

On the right, God is depicted as an old man opposite the newly-created nude Adam, reaching up longingly for life for all mankind.  God wears only a light tunic, exposing his arms and legs - some historians consider this a much more intimate portrait as he is shown not as untouchable but one which is accessible to Adam. Stretching out his right arm to give Adam the touch of life, the lounging position of both Adam and God, the use of bodies which are both muscular and twisting are hallmarks of Michelangelo’s painting style and study of Renaissance Humanism overall.

One of the frequent questions raised is the identity of the twelve figures around God. Given her privileged placement under the arm of God, the female figure is presumably an important one.  Traditionally, she has been thought to be Eve, the future wife of Adam, who waits to be created from Adam’s rib. Some popular theories about the other eleven are that they are angels or offspring of Adam and Eve to come.

Everything proceeds from everything else and everything becomes everything, and everything can be turned into everything else.
— Leonardo da Vinci
